Non Violent Week at School 8.-12.10.2001

Finnish Centre for Health Promotion

Feedback

Updated 17.4.2002

20 Finnish schools planned some activities during the first Non Violent Week 2000. Each school also named the week in their own ways like "Week of wellbeing", "Week of Friendship". Some schools used only some hours for the theme and some schools had bigger happenings. Most of the ideas were integrated to some subjects like art, music, language and physical education. Pupils had an active role in planning and implementation of the activities. Parents and community were informed in local newspapers and some schools also had evenings for parents.

  • Lessons and presentations about bullying. What is the reason for bullying? Lectures about violence by local health personnel police and priest. A big discussion can also be organised, where the school is an audience. Daily openings with the theme to raise awareness.
  • Gimme five: big paper on the wall - pupils can write different ways to say hello on paper. Same topic was also used on language lessons.
  • Hand-shaking competition: how many persons you shake hand with in a day or hugging competition: how many persons you have the courage to hug in a day.
  • Poster-competition: every class made one big poster "It's nice to be together / friendship / our class". Posters were placed to the hall and pupils could vote for the best. Every class could also draw a picture of the class in a funny way (like the whole class dressed like clowns).
  • Mental Olympic-games
  • Relaxation week for everyone!
  • Photographing of groups in a small place (how many persons are able to be in a small closet at the same time)
  • School drama group: bullying experiences and afterwards discussion of feelings. Young and older pupils discuss together in small groups about what to do if somebody is bullying and what is bullying?
  • Songs, poems and aphorisms of friendship, (writing or reading) some of them were used in daily openings.
  • A declaration of safe school year, every pupil/class undersign a commitment.
  • Action days: how to express feelings
  • Idea-box in classroom, where every pupil can put his/her own idea about how to increase positive atmosphere at our school/ in our classroom. On last day the box was opened and an abstract made of the ideas.
  • Survey about bullying made by tutors, teachers or pupils themselves; results were discussed in parents' evenings and in classrooms.
  • Secret friend: every pupil had a secret friend the whole week. The friend tried to help and increase wellbeing somehow during the week. On last day a celebration party, where those secret friends were revealed.
